Jesus didn’t say, “Beware of atheists”. He warned us to beware of wolves in sheeps clothing.
The greatest danger to the Church has never been from those on the outside; it’s deception from the inside. Wolves don’t announce themselves. They look spiritual, quote Scripture, speak confidently, and often have the blind trust of believers before they’re ever exposed for what they truly are.
Here are 5 traits of a wolf you and I need to watch for:
1- They secretly slander and gossip about others. Instead of confronting people to their faces, they whisper behind closed doors, plant seeds of suspicion, and damage reputations while presenting themselves as righteous. They do it in “godly” ways such as “We need to pray for so and so” or “Watch out for so and so; they’re used by satan”.
2- They demand unquestioning loyalty. A wolf wants followers who obey without asking questions. Healthy biblical leaders point people to Christ and welcome accountability. Wolves expect blind obedience and treat disagreement as rebellion and “being a pharisee”.
3- They weaponize Scripture. God’s Word is meant to correct, encourage, and lead people to Christ; it’s not meant to control, shame, intimidate, or silence anyone who asks honest questions. Wolves pull verses out of context to condemn others while excusing their own sin.
4- They isolate people from those who genuinely care about them. One of the most effective tactics of a wolf is isolation. Wolves discourage relationships that threaten their unhealthy leadership. God uses those outside of the wolf’s influence to provide wisdom, protection, encouragement, and accountability and because of that, a wolf will do all in his power to cut off relationships that threaten their power over your life.
5- They use prophetic words, dreams, visions, etc, to keep their hold on you and some wolves even have prophetic words that come to pass so it’s much harder to accept the reality that they’re evil since their “prophecy” seemed to have touched your heart. Wolves use supernatural giftings often in order to mask their evil and keep you under their spell.
Jesus said we would recognize false teachers by their fruit… not by their words, prophecies, miracles, etc. Charisma isn’t character and a large following isn’t proof of God’s approval. Quoting Scripture isn’t the same as living it.
The safest place for every believer is to know God’s Word, test every teaching, and keep Jesus… not a pastor, ministry, or denomination…as the highest authority.
