Biblical Authority

As Brother Jimmy Humphrey rightly stated, “It’s so important for churches to never be centered around one charismatic leader. Jesus alone is our leader, and we should only follow him. Beware of any leader that demands you be “under authority.”

The Bible teaches that there’s “one” mediator between God and Man… and that’s Jesus Christ alone (1 Timothy 2:5). The moment a Pastor, Prophet, Evangelist, etc, becomes our “go to” for counsel or advice is the moment we allow them to take the place of Jesus Christ in our lives. Often, this comes in the form of “wanting a word” or “wanting a confirmation”. How many of you know that the devil can confirm “a word” too? How many understand that the Bible says in Matthew 16:4 that those who “seek a sign” are wicked and adulterous? Yes, God speaks today… but we’re not to “seek” these things from others. On the contrary, we’re to seek the Face of God in prayer. The job of the Pastor, Prophet, Evangelist, etc is to get you “away” from seeking them and into seeking God! When a leader becomes God’s voice to you, both you and that leader have usurped God’s authority in your life. Yes, we need counsel; yes we need submission; yes we need authority… but no, we do not obey anyone for any reason until we first hear from God on the matter!

Acts 5:29 “But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.”
